Gravel Driveways

Affordable, durable driveways built with proper grading and drainage.

A well-built gravel driveway is one of the most cost-effective ways to create a durable, functional driving surface. OAX Construction installs gravel driveways that hold up to Michigan weather and daily use.

Gravel driveways are a popular choice for rural properties, long driveways, and homeowners looking for an affordable alternative to concrete or asphalt. When installed correctly with proper base layers, grading, and drainage, a gravel driveway provides reliable performance for years. Our team serves homeowners throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, Mattawan, Schoolcraft, and the greater Southwest Michigan area.

Our Process

How We Build Your Gravel Driveway

1. Site Preparation

Clear vegetation, remove topsoil, and grade the subgrade for proper slope and drainage.

2. Base Layer

Larger crushed stone compacted to create a stable, load-bearing foundation.

3. Middle Layer

Mid-size aggregate fills gaps in the base and adds structural strength.

4. Surface Layer

Finished gravel surface graded with a crown for water runoff and a clean appearance.

Why Gravel

Benefits of a Gravel Driveway

Gravel driveways offer several advantages. They cost significantly less than concrete or asphalt, making them ideal for long driveways or large properties. Installation is faster, and the surface can be used almost immediately.

Gravel provides excellent natural drainage, which reduces runoff and standing water problems. In Michigan's freeze-thaw climate, gravel is forgiving because it flexes with ground movement rather than cracking like rigid surfaces. Maintenance is straightforward. Periodic grading and occasional top-dressing with fresh gravel keep the surface in good condition.

For properties where a concrete driveway isn't in the budget or where the driveway is exceptionally long, gravel is a practical, attractive solution that delivers real value.

FAQ

Gravel Driveway Questions

How thick should a gravel driveway be?

We recommend a total depth of 8 to 12 inches built in three layers. The base layer is typically 4 to 6 inches of larger crushed stone, followed by 2 to 3 inches of mid-size aggregate, and topped with 2 to 3 inches of surface gravel. This layered approach creates a stable, long-lasting surface.

How do I maintain a gravel driveway?

Periodic grading with a box blade or grader keeps the surface even and maintains the crown for drainage. Most gravel driveways in the Kalamazoo area benefit from grading once or twice a year and a fresh layer of surface gravel every 2 to 3 years. Filling potholes and ruts promptly prevents them from growing.

What type of gravel is best for driveways?

We use crushed limestone or crushed concrete for the base layers because the angular edges lock together and resist shifting. For the surface, 21AA crushed limestone is a popular choice in Michigan because it compacts well, drains effectively, and provides a clean finished look.
